Master's Student
Monogastric Nutrition Laboratory UIUC
Champaign, Illinois
My name is Jessica Paola Acosta Medellín, from Bogotá, Colombia. I grew up in the capital city but always fascinated by animals, natural resources, biology, and science. During college, I became interested in all topics related to swine production because this is one of the best and more important industries in my country as efficient and sustainable production. In 2018, I got involved in practical activities in the university farm, “Centro Agropecuario Marengo”, nearby Bogota. There I learned about swine production, feeding, reproduction, handling, and pig herd management. In 2019, I traveled to the US because I had got a chance to do an internship with the Monogastric Nutrition laboratory of the U of I at Urbana Champaign, with Dr. Hans Stein. There I was participating in the swine farm work, focused on research. I obtained my bachelor’s degree in Animal Sciences at the National University of Colombia in 2020.
I am very grateful to Dr. Stein, Dr. Gloria Casas and Mr. German Guerrero, who allow me to be part of the Monogastric Nutrition Lab team. I want to get new skills and set up new objectives for my life's project. In the future I hope to contribute to the development of the Swine Industry in my country, work in the animal industry, and be a pride for my family. I am thankful for support me.
